treasure☼hunt

we had to trek to nampa today
for marian's student council conference.

the drive {with a stop for coffee}
took a full hour, so i decided to just stay put,
rather than spend an extra 2 hours in the car
driving home & back again to pick her up.

it was under such circumstances
{time on my hands + several thrift stores}
that i had a good day hunting for treasures.
i've been switching all my dishes to white.
my criteria:
~ white {or cream or tan}
~ sturdy restaurant ware
~ american or european made

i love finding exactly what i'm looking for:

today it was mugs and smaller plates.

i'm keeping & using the white dishes,
but the rest are things that
will be in my etsy shop someday soon:

square cups

ornate tins

a sweet cream & sugar set

oh, and i'm keeping the apron!

i stayed up late last night baking a
you will want to bake this.
find the recipe here.

i'm in no shape to measure ingredients
or follow a recipe first thing in the morning.
baking at night
means i wake up to instant yum.
baking at night
helps me get out of bed in the morning.

pete seeger, a legend

at the age of 94,
{he'll be 95 in november!}
pete seeger was a surprise guest
at farm aid last week.
{photo via rolling stone}

this land is your land was written by woody guthrie.
i saw woody's son, arlo, in a tiny concert long ago.
he sang it with the "no trespassing" verse.
he said his dad wrote it that way.
i had never heard it before:
as i went walking i saw a sign there,
and on the sign it said "no trespassing,"
but on the other side that sign said nothing,
that side was made for you & me.

i've had this wonderful pete seeger album,
recorded live in concert in 1963,
since emily was a baby.
it's just the best, hearing all the kids
cracking up at his jokes & stories.
and i love hearing their voices ring,
singing with him - they know all the words!
you'll always know you neighbor,
you'll always know your pal,
if you've ever navigated on the erie canal
universal, indeed.

anthro dress crush

::yes::

::yes::

::yes::

these three are part of anthro's new
"online exclusive" collection.

i need to start sewing,
because none of them are wallet-friendly.

which one is your favorite?

the bottom two remind me of this
tracy porter dress, which i own & love.

our weather cooled down this week,
and i've been wearing little dresses
with leggings & short boots & a cardigan.

do you have a fall uniform?

baked eggplant parmesan

eggplant, tomatoes, & garlic,
all from the farm.

i made this amazing tomato sauce:
onion, garlic, olive oil, salt & pepper,
and every fresh tomato i had on hand.
{romas, green zebras, heirloom slicers, cherries}
i breaded & baked the eggplant like so:

preheat oven to 400°
line baking sheets with parchment.

{i peeled the eggplant first, an optional step}

slice eggplant thinly, about ½ inch.
salt the sliced eggplant & place in a colander.

in a small bowl,
beat a couple of eggs.

in a larger bowl, combine:
panko bread crumbs
lots of grated parmesan cheese
dried oregano
salt & pepper

dip the slices in the egg,
dredge in the bread crumb mixture,
then place in a single layer
on the parchment-covered baking sheet.

bake until golden {about 20 minutes}
then, using tongs, turn the slices over and bake
the other sides until golden {another 20}.

i served it with the tomato sauce,
lots of grated parmesan & fresh mozzarella.

and, just like that,
marian {my eggplant hater} loves eggplant.

rice crispy treats

peanut butter chocolate
rice crispy treats
with a mix of crispy & puffed rice cereal.
wholesome and decadent.
i found the recipe here.
peanut butter chocolate rice crispy treats
2/3 cup peanut butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
{plus salt & chocolate chips}

line an 11 x 7 inch pan with parchment.
{no oil needed}

heat the first 3 ingredients in a large saucepan.
once they are warm & liquified,
mix in the cereal.
stir until well coated,
then pour into parchment lined pan.
press into the pan, especially the corners.

sprinkle some salt on top,
then a layer of mini chocolate chips.

note:
i popped the whole thing in the microwave
for about 30 seconds to melt the chocolate,
then used a butter knife to spread it around.

after about 10 minutes in the fridge,
they were ready to cut.
and eat.
and, dang, they're good.

a request

dear reader,
i have a request.
you see, aliana's 10th birthday
is september 25th, next wednesday.

i would very much like for her mailbox to
 ~overflow~
with birthday wishes and treats.
i would like for aliana's socks to be knocked off
by the sheer volume of birthday wishes.
i'll go out on a limb here and say that
missy would like it, as well.
{aliana & her mama, june 2012}

will you please
send aliana a birthday card?
or anything else you think might delight her?
it is a well-known fact that she
likes gum and chocolate and stickers
and other things of that nature.
also, fairies, animals, and flowers.
she's a cuddly sweetheart.
a blessing to everyone who knows her.

i know i can count on you
to brighten up this girl's very special day.

go ahead and spread the word!
maybe you could mention her birthday
to certain friends who are
especially good at this sort of thing.
just an idea.

there she is!
checking her mailbox for birthday cards!!

this picture of missy's blessing way
was taken on this very day, ten years ago

p.s.
please don't worry if you are reading this
and it's now too late to send something
to arrive on september 25th.
do you remember being ten years old?
would you have liked cards & treats
to trickle in for weeks?
i think we both know the answer.
please send her your sweet card,
no matter the date.

tomato tasting last night

this was really special.
local farmers & backyard gardeners
brought their favorite tomatoes to share.
there was story telling - tomato stories,
some from the very ground we walked on.
{casey from earthly delights farm}

{garnet from edwards greenhouse}

stories were being officially collected
and recorded by boise 150 historians.

delicious heirloom tomatoes
are worth fighting for,
and there were some incredible stories
to prove that point.
so much tomato history, right here in boise.
there was a contest,
which required tasting,
then voting with an actual ballot.

tomato registration happened here
she's registering our tomatoes, very official
our sungolds {#44} were really our favorite,
but these virginia sweets were a close second.

food was available from archie's place
we had the "griddled" cheese
{cooked cheese-side-down on the griddle}
and spicy grilled pineapple.
.yum.

and as if on cue at this end-of-summer evening,
the seasons changed in the air around us.
while we tasted summer's glory,
she gave way to autumn.
