drunken woman frizzy headed lettuce

curious about garlic scapes?
here's what casey has to say about them:
the incredible flowering tops of our Magic Garlic plants.
Hard neck varieties of garlic send up a "flower",
which actually turns into a tiny bulb of garlic,
suspended in the air on a curly, whimsical stem.
Though it would likely be impossible to grow
a decent-sized garlic bulb from the tiny bulb it makes,
you can certainly eat them before they've fully ripened,
as chefs and savvy cooks the world over have discovered.
To eat scapes,
you can either chop them finely and saute them
like you would garlic (adding fantastic flavor to any dish),
or you can keep the flower part whole
and saute it alone or with other veggies.
It's kinda like a big, garlic-flavored asparagus stem...
in fact, the two make perfect grilling companions!

these guys

my favorite couple
celebrates 53 years today.

happy anniversary, mom & dad.
i love you.

p.s. here's what they have to say:
Our best advice is don't sweat the small stuff
that you'll forget in a couple of days anyway.
Also, laugh a lot.

baked oatmeal

healthy & seriously delicious baked oatmeal.

ingredients:
2 cups rolled oats
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp ginger
1/8 tsp sea salt
----------------------
2 cups almond milk
2 Tbsp chia seeds (soaked in 4 Tbsp almond milk)
2 Tbsp maple syrup
-----------------------
3/4 cup chopped walnuts
1/3 cup chopped dates
2 apples, diced

soak chia seeds in almond milk and let sit for 5 minutes.
in a bowl combine the oats, baking powder, spices, and salt.
in another bowl combine the chia seed mixture, almond milk, and maple syrup.
add the wet ingredients to the oat mixture, and stir in 1/2 cup walnuts (saving 1/4 cup for the top), dates, and the diced apple.
pour the mixture into a 9" x 13" pan that has been greased lightly with coconut oil.
top with reserved 1/4 walnuts.
bake at 375°F for 30-35 minutes, or until golden.
cool slightly and serve.
drizzle with maple syrup & cream.

i veered from the recipe a bit
using what i had on hand:
added flax seeds,
swapped raisins for dates,
used walnuts and almonds,
and a mix of milks:
rice, coconut, & a little half-n-half.

all my favorite breakfast flavors
{well, except for chocolate}:
apple, maple, cinnamon, nutmeg.

almost makes me forget about
donuts & croissants.
almost.

last week,
anastasia asked why i call it our "share."
in case you were wondering, here's why:
{csa = community supported agriculture}
we pay in advance for 18 weeks of produce.
this enables our farmer {casey}
to focus more on growing & less on selling,
since her produce is "sold"
even before she has grown it.
each week,
beginning in may and ending in september,
we go to the farm with our
bags & baskets ready to collect our
weekly share of the harvest.
our pick-up day is a fun time to visit the farm
and get to know the other csa members.
this is a great way to support our local farmer
{we love her!}
and eat delicious, locally grown food.
each year, casey has a small group of interns
who help her on the farm.
it's an amazing opportunity
that attracts the finest of folks.
read more about the internship program here.
