chicka chicka

we are now out of beads,
so we have started a new stay-cation theme:
chicks

my talented and industrious friend, jessica,
has begun her backyard flock of five little hens.
{note: she petitioned her neighborhood committee
for an exception the regulations in order to do this - go jessica!}
when she told me they would have to take
the babies with them to grandma's house,
i offered to chicken-sit for a few days.

{i think our next theme will be: haircut}

show & tell {heart rock}

on tuesday of this week,
ned gave me this giant heart rock.
he found it while walking with marian.

he brought it for show & tell today.

it is my very favorite one.

do you have a heart rock or two?
please email a photo of yours to

the cricket {times seven}

i'll bet that you have read this,

but have you read these?

back in the fall,
i began reading the cricket in times square
to ned & marian every night.
it was ned's first time reading a lengthy chapter book.
i was impressed with his ability to
listen to an entire chapter at a time
with very few pictures.

i saw that there were other cricket-related titles
{all written by george selden & illustrated by garth williams}
and found each of them at our library.

we have finished the very last book.
some were better than others,
but we have really enjoyed these stories.

and by reading like this for months & months,
we have made it a habit.
we are through with the cricket books,
but that reading time is still there.
every night.
we have carved out a permanent and peaceful
20-minute pocket of time,
after baths and right before bed,
that we all look forward to.

and now we are reading these

what are YOU reading?

kids art :: colored pencils

kids are naturally artistic.
even simple letters and numbers
are rendered with uniqueness.
their creativity flows unfiltered onto paper.

i love colored pencils for kids' drawings.
they allow precise expression of delicate details.

{ned's fox}
{ned's sharkfish}
{ned's three-winged dragon}

and i love the effect picnik's invert has on these.
