the secret zoo

ned & i are knee-deep into a new book,
the secret zoo

here's the summary:
When three friends link a girl's disappearance to unusual activity
at their local zoo, they discover that each exhibit
holds a hidden passage to a secret zoo kingdom.
To rescue their friend, the children must band with the animals,
enter this mysterious world, and embark on an exciting adventure
in the first book of an epic series for middle-grade readers.

the kids in the book are unraveling a mystery
that clearly involves some kind of magic.
the part that i was a little unsure of
is that the kids in the story
are searching for noah's sister, megan,
who has been missing for more than three weeks.
there is no indication that she has been hurt
but it does seem that she has been kidnapped
after witnessing something secret.
the animals don't actually speak to the kids
but they are obviously on their side,
delivering messages and clues to help them.
it is getting spooky and suspenseful,
compelling us to stay up late
to read just a little bit more.
some of the chapters are only two pages long,
so it's easy to say yes
when ned asks me to read another one
before turning out the light.

we found it in his scholastic book order,
and there are several more books in the series.
read more about it here and here.

my mess, my taxes, & some irish folksongs

does YOUR mess have a mustache?
  or its own music?
 raking through my beautiful mess
has been balanced lately
by this:
taxes.
it's nearly done.

now for some more music...
here is another lesser-known
van morrison album,
irish heartbeat {from 1988}.
these are traditional irish folksongs
recorded in collaboration with the chieftains.
very different from astral weeks,
but this album so sweet.
i have spent hours listening to these songs
and i love them.

i can't get the first track to play.
if you are having the same problem, try this:

astral weeks

do you know this van morrison album?
i'll tell you what,
it is my favorite album of all time.

it was recorded in 1968.
i discovered it around 1990,
when i was nearly 20.
it was played for me on purpose
by some creative friends
who knew i would love it.
i remember them, smiling, watching me listen.
i was honestly spellbound.
it changed my summer,
and it lodged itself inside me forever.
if i had to choose just one album
to listen to for the rest of my days,
this would be it.
van morrison is amazing.
read more about astral weeks here.

i'm trying grooveshark for the first time,
but i'm having a little trouble.
fingers crossed that you can listen...
if it skips over the tracks,
try double clicking each one.
it seems to work better listening on grooveshark.

big trip

marian & i are planning a big trip.
in june, we are going to
london, paris, florence, and rome.
we have never been.

the art teacher from marian's school
is organizing the trip {it's all moms & daughters}
through education first.
you can see more details of our trip here.

we have plans to meet pam in paris.  yay!!!

we are even considering extending our trip
to go to mallorca island to visit anastasia.
can this happen???  i really hope so.

we'd love to hear your list of
things we "must see" on our trip,
and which places are your favorites.
also, which books we should read beforehand.

marian's trip is nearly paid for.
she has paid half of each monthly payment.
babysitting, dog walking,
and saving since last spring.
she's almost there.
if you want to chip in to help her
you can do it here.

victorian milagro hearts & radiating hearts

i make it my job to come up with crafts
for the holiday parties in ned's class.
it can be tricky to find projects that
work within that kind of chaos and energy,
but these two were perfect.
the kids loved them and were so proud
of their handmade valentines.

victorian milagro hearts
these are so simple and so old-fashioned.
they remind me of these

these were inspired by a package
of doilies i found at the thrift store.
i had to cut them so that there
would be enough for everyone,
and the shapes just came together.

just 4 pieces: a red paper heart,
a doily slice, a loop of ribbon, a little paper bag.
we just taped them together,
then slipped them into their semi-translucent bags.

i found the idea for these
radiating heart valentines

this kid

has missed more than a week of school
due to a long-lasting bad cold that
turned into a sinus infection.
his temp yesterday at the doctor's office
{our second doctor visit in 5 days}
was a whopping 103.8°
after a few doses of amoxicillin,
he is back to his silly 98.6° self.
better living through science, my friends.
while he was feverish,
his only request was for
barbara's cheese puffs and gatorade.
i told him that there was something
better than gatorade: knudsen recharge.
this stuff got me through all of my
pregnancies, births, and nursing.
i bought it by the case.
way, way better than gatorade.
ned has been converted.
and he's going back to school tomorrow.
