a song from jenny

jenny & missy

creation dream
this is the only video of creation dream i could find on youtube.
i suggest that you just close your eyes and listen.
Centered on silence
Counting on nothing
I saw you standing on the sea
And everything was
Dark except for
Sparks the wind struck from your hair
Sparks that turned to
Wings around you
Angel voices mixed with seabird cries
Fields of motion
Surging outward
Questions that contain their own replies...

You were dancing
I saw you dancing
Throwing your arms toward the sky
Fingers open-ing like flares
Stars were shooting everywhere
Lines of power
Bursting outward
Along the channels of your song
Mercury waves flashed
Under your feet
Shots of silver in the shell-pink dawn...

missy

~is soaring~

sweet friend,
i'll see you soon.

in the meantime,
i'll be looking for you
in the moon & stars,
in the mountains & oceans & rivers,
in sunny skies & rain clouds,
in flowers & fields & trees,
in the wind,
and everywhere.

love and love and love

proper music

yesterday, missy asked,
 in a whisper, for "proper music" : )
her stepdaughter, laurel, said, "tina malia?"
missy whispered, "perfect."

block printing

this year, in ned's class,
i have shared the job of art mom
with janelle, another art mom.
it really has been so much better with two,
especially since his class size is close to 30.

this block printing project was janelle's idea,
and i loved it so much that i brought home
the materials to make a few myself.
the materials:
a wooden block
{about 2½" square},
wool yarn
{enough to wrap several times},
acrylic craft paint,
& paper
{cut to 10" x 7½"}.
also helpful:
a paper plate for a palette,
cardboard for a mat.
when printing,
start in the top left corner
and rotate ¼ turn each time you print.
this creates a more random pattern.
make 4 rows across, and three rows down.

rustic, but orderly.

tree city juice and smoothie cafe

okay, treasure valley neighbors,
i need to tell you about a really rad,
bona fide juice bar in our neck of the woods.
{it's even affordably priced}
juice and smoothie cafe.

there is a location downtown, on capitol,
and this one is in meridian,
at the corner of eagle road & fairview.

they have shelves of fresh wheatgrass.

it's legit.
we've been making it our
saturday after-soccer routine.

eco-tip:
if you bring your own cup,
they give you 50¢ off.

i get a 24 oz vitariffic
they each get a 16 oz mango sunrise
{with raspberries}
today, they gave us
don't put junk in your trunk
stickers to stick on our cups.
they even have sandwiches.
see the full menu here.
join their tree-hugger's club
to earn points & to get a free smoothie
on your birthday.

second grade self-portraits

ned's class did the most amazing
self-portrait project for mother's day.
{click on the image below to get a better view}
his awesome teacher,
miss michalak {say: mee-HALL-ick},
did this project with the kids.
{she does this every year for mother's day.}

she had the kids start with a mirror,
a 5" x 8" sheet of paper,
and a pencil.

she talked about face shapes,
facial features, and proportions.

using their mirror as a guide,
she had them draw their faces,
roughly the size of their hand,
on the paper with the pencil.

next, she had them lay a piece of
5" x 8" plexiglass on top of their drawing.
using a sharpie, they traced their drawing
onto the plexiglass.

then, they flipped the plexiglass over
and painted the back using acrylic paint.
there was lots of debate
about how to mix the paints to create
their accurate hair and skin colors.

after the paint dried, there was an opportunity
to fine-tune the sharpie on the front.

the results were so beautiful.
the kids really captured their physical features,
as well as their personalities.

{front}

{back}

{i love that ned added his beauty mark}
{of course, it is a mirror image}

i am just so impressed with these
aren't they amazing?
