old mother hubbard

do you ever
try
to run out of groceries?
i have been putting off a shopping trip for a few days,
and making a concerted effort to polish off what we've got
before buying more.
we are out of a few essentials:
whole-wheat bread, brown rice, and salt.
we have one egg, one banana, and one orange.
we have about 3/4 cup of cheerios left.

i like to do this for several reasons:

1. it is
budget-friendly
to make do with what we have,

2. it stimulates my
creativity
"what can i make with 4 carrots, 2 eggs, and 1 can of white beans?",

3. it creates
empty space
in my fridge & pantry
so i can wipe the shelves clean & take inventory.

today, in the midst of the clean-out, ned's lunch was
~ banana houses with peanut butter roofs ~
no bread required!

Sorry...one more thing....would you share with me what you buy in the bulk food section at WINCO?? I am trying to buy so much more that way (I just did sugar, flour...so much cheaper)...I always buy brown rice, whole wheat pasta, quinoa, couscous and flax seed and spices...but is there anything else you like getting there as well...thanks my dear!

i always buy nuts in bulk at winco:
pecans, almonds, pine nuts, and peanuts in the shell. i also grind my own peanut butter & almond butter at winco.
there are some bulk things that i buy at our co-op because i like to buy organic.
bulk is so much better - you skip the packaging & buy only what you need.

I do this too Catie...my kids can't stand it but to me it's like a game. how low can I go?? :) I stock up on nuts and cheese at Trader Joes! Headed there today!! Our farmers market opens next Friday..I simply cannot wait! I decided to wait on the CSA share this year. I'm new to this farmers market and want to see how it is...plus I want to take inventory of what we eat this summer to see if its' worth the $700...hopefully next year!! xoxo love your pantry pictures!

Thanks Catie...I have never tried the peanut butter and almond butter, I think I will. I am really trying to buy more organic besides produce and dairy. You are so helpful to me while I am learning all this! Thanks!

rebecca ~
okay, so i did clean the fridge...
i let it get a little bare (so i can clear one shelf) & then wipe it clean.
but i have to tell you that my mother saw this said she can't remember when she's seen it quite THIS clean : )

and the MONKEY PLATE!!!
my mom sent it to ned a couple years ago. he eats lunch on that plate every. single. day.
when i bend down to get it out of the cabinet, i like to say, "OH, NO!"
ned says, "what?"
and then i stand up with the plate over my face & shriek, "MONKEY PLATE!" ♥
